If you don't watch your mind, who will? If the mind is left on its own without an observer, what does it do? - Ajahan Sumano
A long lost profession is that of a lamp lighter. Most European cities employed such individuals to light candle or gas lamps as the sun began to set. This provided citizens with safety while walking streets after dark. With the introduction of electricity, the lamp lighting profession ceased to exist.
However, the symbolism is compelling. Communities still need women and men dedicated to lighting the lamp of hope where there is despair, compassion where there is suffering, love where there is abandonment, courage where there is fear. Such spiritual lamp lighters bring people safety, security and stability as they navigate through their times of darkness. Where do people spend the most time? The workplace! If awakening is to be something more than the exclusive preserve of hermits and monastics, it has to be expressed in the work that we do. - Lewis Richmond
